UIC–EPA P2 Program Delivers Measurable Results Across Illinois Industry
Introduction
Since its launch in 2024, the Pollution Prevention (P2) Program, a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Illinois Chicago Energy Resources Center (ERC), has demonstrated how targeted technical assistance can accelerate sustainability while strengthening industrial competitiveness.
Over the past two years, the program has supported 20 small- to medium-sized industrial facilities across key sectors, including food and beverage manufacturing, chemical processing and formulation, and metal manufacturing and fabrication. The initiative’s mission has been straightforward but impactful: identify practical, cost-effective ways for facilities to reduce pollution, improve energy efficiency, and advance decarbonization goals.
A Hands-On, Customized Approach
At the core of the program is a highly personalized, on-site engagement model. Teams of UIC staff and trained students, equipped with expertise in pollution prevention, industrial energy systems, and emissions reduction, conducted one-day site visits at participating facilities.
During each visit, the team evaluated operations, identified inefficiencies, and assessed opportunities to reduce environmental impact. These insights were then compiled into customized reports tailored to each facility, outlining actionable recommendations for:
Energy efficiency improvements
Emissions and waste reduction strategies
Water conservation measures
Process optimization opportunities
This practical, facility-specific approach ensured that recommendations were not only environmentally beneficial but also economically viable.
Real-World Results with Lasting Impact
Implementation of these recommendations has already led to substantial environmental and financial gains. To date, participating facilities have achieved:
Hazardous material and chemical use reduction: 5,000 lb/year
Air and water pollution reduction: 2,000 lb/year
Water consumption reduction: 1,700,000 gallons/year
Electricity savings: 2,800,000 kWh/year
Natural gas savings: 200,000 therms/year
Greenhouse gas emissions reduction: 31,000 metric tons CO₂ equivalent/year
Operating cost savings: $860,000 annually
These outcomes highlight the powerful alignment between sustainability and profitability. By reducing waste and improving efficiency, facilities are not only lowering their environmental footprint but also enhancing their bottom line.
Building the Next Generation of Sustainability Leaders
An equally important outcome of the P2 Program has been workforce development. UIC students participating in the program gained hands-on experience working directly with industry, applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. This experiential learning model is helping to prepare the next generation of engineers and sustainability professionals with the skills needed to lead the transition to a cleaner economy.
Looking Ahead
While the results to date are significant, the program’s impact is far from complete. Many facilities are still in the process of implementing additional recommendations, with further reductions in emissions, resource use, and costs expected in the coming years.
The success of the UIC–EPA P2 Program demonstrates that collaborative, data-driven approaches can deliver tangible benefits for both industry and the environment. As more organizations seek to meet sustainability targets and regulatory expectations, programs like this offer a scalable model for meaningful, measurable change.
